Wild Law Weekend 2018 – Coniston Coppermines hostel, Cumbria

The programme for the weekend will have to be flexible to take account of the weather and wishes of participants but will be along the following lines:  

Friday 25th May

  • Arrive Penrith station where minibus will meet you at 3.30pm for onward travel to the hostel.  
  • Arrive hostel at approximately 5pm to settle in before dinner.
  • Dinner at 7pm.
  • After dinner, time to look forward to the weekend's programme of activities, led by Simon, Crispin and Jake.
  • Shehana Gomez and  Michele Perrin-Taillat will give an update of the Wild Law Group.
  • Colin Robertson will lead a discussion on whether the Old Man of Coniston has a personality and should have legal rights.
  • Note if you are making your own way to the hostel, there is free parking available (please let us know)

 

Saturday 26th May

  • 8am  Breakfast
  • 9.30am  minibus to Glenridding
  • 10.30 meet Pete Barron of the John Muir Trust at car park Grid Ref  385 169
  • Pete, who is the manager of the Glenridding Estate will take us on a walk going up to Red Tarn where he will explain the management of the estate, the lease of which was recently taken on by the John Muir Trust.
  • Lunch at Red Tarn under Helvellyn. After lunch there is the option of going with the high or the low level party.
  • The High Level Party will continue with Pete up Swirral Edge and onto the summit of Helvellyn. They will then carry northwards along the ridge to Sticks Pass and then descend to Glenridding. This route should only be taken by experienced walkers who are comfortable with a reasonable level of exposure.
  • The Low Level Party will descend along Red Tarn Beck to Greenside Mine. This will be a moderate walk.
  • 18.00 minibus pick up and return to hostel
  • 19.30 -20.30 dinner at the youth hostel
  • 20.30 -22.00 Wild Law discussion drawing on our experiences of the day. What kind of landscape should we be trying to develop in the Lake District which is a World Heritage Site? Traditional sheep farming or rewilding and increasing overage of native woodland? The arguments of George Monbiot in his controversial book Feral will be considered and consider the Council of Europe Landscape Convention.


Sunday 27th May

  • 8am Breakfast
  • We will spend the day walking the beautiful Coniston fells.
  • There will be high level and low level walk options. In both case we will start from the hostel so will not need to drive:
  • High Level Option: An ascent of four of the Coniston tops, Wetherlam Swirl How, Brim Fell and Coniston Old Man. High level walk approximately 6 hours but with no technical difficulties.
  • Low Level Option; Exploration of Levers Water and the Pudding Stone. Approximately  4.5 miles
  • 18.00 Groups return to hostel
  • 18.30 - 19.30 dinner, joined by Julia Aglionby 
  • 19.30 - 21.00 a discussion led by Julia Aglionby an overview of traditional sheep farming in the Lake District and what the future may hold. 

 

Monday 28th May

  • 7.45am Breakfast, followed by checkout
  • 9am Minibus to Penrith station
