The weekend is based at Boggle Hole Youth Hostel situated right on the East Yorkshire coast in the North York Moors National Park, near Whitby. There will be activities along the coast and inland and environmental discussions in the evenings. A minibus will be provided for transport over the weekend.

Transport:

Friday 24th May

A minibus will leave Scarborough at approximately 4.30pm from the main railway station for the short trip to the hostel (approx. 20-30 minutes). We suggest you take a train from London Kings Cross at 12.30pm to arrive in Scarborough at 15.35pm. The Edinburgh train leaves at 12.08pm and arrives at 15.40pm. 

Note that there will be a short wait in Scarborough whilst we pick up the minibus (enough time for a cuppa!)  

If you plan to make your own way to the hostel, please let us know on the booking form – there is parking near to the hostel, accessed via an unlit path, so you will need to bring a torch.   

Monday 27th May 

The mini bus will leave the hostel at 08.30am in time to catch the  9.46am train from Scarborough to London Kings Cross, arriving London at 12.49pm.  The Edinburgh train leaves at 9.41am, arriving at 13.20pm.  


Accommodation 

Based at the Boggle Hole Youth hostel in a smuggler’s bay with direct access to the coast and is surrounded by mature, wooded grounds. The hostel provides 3 star accommodation having recently undergone a major renovation. All food will be provided including packed lunch.  

Activities 

The programme for the weekend will have to be flexible to take account of the weather and wishes of participants but it is hoped to include most, if not all, of the following:  

Friday 24th May 

Arrive Scarborough Station, mini bus to hostel at 4.30pm approx. 19.00 dinner at hostel 

Simon and Charles will run through the programme. 

Talk by John Hunt on seabirds   


Saturday 25th May 

08.00  Breakfast- pick up packed lunch 

09.00 drive to Flamborough Head (33 miles approx. 1 hour) 

Day spent bird watching starting at Flamborough and walking over the sea cliffs to Bempton and then returning. Generally easy/moderate walking. 

We will stop for lunch along the way at approx. 13.00. 

17.00 return to minibus 

18.30 return to hostel. 

19.00 dinner at hostel 

20.00 – 21.00 talk by Sir Crispin Agnew on ‘The implications of the Scottish Government’s Approach to Sustainable Development’ 

21.00 – 23.00 informal discussions or walk along coast to Robin Hood’s Bay   


Sunday 26th May 

8am Breakfast- pick up packed lunch 

09.00 drive to Castleton near Danby. Circular walk with sweeping dale views over Westerdale Moor that takes in the source of the River Esk.  Total 13.5 miles. 

19.00 dinner at hostel 

20.00 – 21.00 general discussion on Wild Law developments 


Monday 27th May 

07.00am Breakfast- pick up packed lunch 

8.30 am mini bus leaves for Scarborough station   


Meals 

All of the meals will be provided by staff at the youth hostel to include three evening dinners at the hostel (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), three packed lunches (Saturday, Sunday, Monday) and three breakfasts (Saturday, Sunday, Monday).     

Please let us know of any special dietary requirements in advance on the booking form.   


Things to bring 

binoculars for bird watching, wet weather gear (as we will still be going out whatever the weather even if we need to shorten the walks); sunscreen and a hat;walking shoes or boots; snacks; toiletries including soap and a towel; earplugs and a torch.   


Cost for weekend - £190 (plus very limited discounted tickets for students) 

Included: all meals, activities, transport from Scarborough station at approximately 4.30pm on Friday afternoon and return to Scarborough station at approximately 8.30am on Monday morning; all transportation across the weekend to daytime activities. 

Not included: your transport to and from Scarborough (or other locations), nor any additional expenditure you may have whilst on the weekend.
