You are invited to join the South West regional group for a highly topical seminar on Marine Plastics Pollution - looking at the impact on the oceans, solutions and the legal framework.  The region's AGM will take place just before the seminar.

We have 4 expert speakers:

Dr Steve Simpson is an Associate Professor of Marine Biology & Global Change at the University of Exeter who starred in the BBC’s Blue Planet II series and witnessed first hand the impact of plastic on marine ecosystems. His talk will give us an insight into the impact that marine plastics have on our oceans. Dr Simpson also has particular expertise in fish behaviour and bioacoustics and the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems and fisheries.

Elsa Hadley is an associate solicitor in Burges Salmon’s Environment team. Her work consists of advising a variety of corporates, charities and individuals in respect of environmental regulation and in criminal and civil enviromental claims, as well as providing environmental advice in commercial transactions. Elsa will give an overview of the laws relevant to marine plastics.

Emily Haggett, Green Gown Award Winner 2017 for her research on microplastics in the marine environment and the consequences for the human food chain, Emily is also an active member of Surfers Against Sewage. Her talk will focus on the actions that are taken on the ground by SAS to tackle the problem of marine plastics. She will also touch upon some of the issues surrounding microplastics present in the oceans.

Dr Chris Sherrington is Head of Environmental Policy & Economics at Eunomia Research & Consulting. He leads a number of projects related to ecosystem services, green infrastructure, litter (including marine litter) and waste prevention. Dr Sherrington will give us an update on the current policy landscape surrounding plastic waste and the potential economic and environmental implications of plastics policy proposals.

*UKELA members are warmly invited to attend the SW region AGM at 5pm.  There is no charge to join this short meeting and no requirement to stay for the seminar, although we hope you will.  The agenda is on a separate tab.  If you wish to come to just the AGM, please select that option on the booking form so we have an idea of numbers.
