Seminar 6pm  (registration from 5.30pm) – 7.30pm followed by an opportunity to carry on informal discussion and networking over drinks

Date:

16 October 2019

You are invited to join the South West regional group for a highly topical seminar on Climate Change.

Climate change is rapidly becoming a reality for all parts of the world.  In an environment increasingly affected by extreme weather patterns, it will be necessary to take steps to adapt to our new climate reality and to mitigate its worst effects.

This seminar draws together speakers from a number of key sectors – water, energy, and sustainable development – to discuss the challenges in dealing with the climate of the future, to consider the steps that are already being taken, and to give some thoughts on what more might be done.

(This event will be preceded by the AGM for the SW Committee, to be held at 5.15pm)

Our speakers will be:

Paul Hickey, Deputy Director (Water Resources) at the Environment Agency

Paul Hickey is a Deputy Director at the Environment Agency with oversight of Water Resources for England.  He is responsible for the protection and improvement of the natural environment.  This remit includes water quantity monitoring including the national hydrometric service, management of strategic water resource assets, the abstraction and impoundment regulatory regime and long term water resource planning including drought response.  Prior to this Paul was Head of Water Quality, Groundwater and Land Contamination.  Before joining the Environment Agency Paul worked in the water industry in a variety of regulation and asset management roles.

Paul is a Fellow of the Institute of Water and serves on its Board, Environment Committee and South West Area Committee.

Paul will provide us with insights into resilience and drought management in England.

Jonathan Culley, Senior Associate in Osborne Clarke’s projects practice.

Jonathan Culley is a senior associate in Osborne Clarke's projects team with a focus on construction and a very keen interest in sustainable development. Jonathan will be providing his brief perspective on sustainability in construction, including his view on the current climate in the industry, a run through some of the key principles involved for achieving BREEAM accreditation, a look at some of the drivers and obstacles to sustainability in construction - and how things may develop going forward.

*UKELA members are warmly invited to attend the SW region AGM at 5.15pm.  There is no charge to join this short meeting and no requirement to stay for the seminar, although we hope you will.  The agenda is on a separate tab.  If you wish to come just to the AGM, please select that option on the booking form so we have an idea of numbers.

UKELA is grateful to Burges Salmon for hosting and sponsoring this event
